Do You Know Your North Star in Life?

Everything is connected.

Yet we're constantly told to think in silos.

  • Physical health - Mental health

  • Professional life - Personal life

  • Performance - Wellbeing

It's not just outdated. It's plain wrong. And all the latest science and data proves this.

Regular readers will know how strongly I feel about this, but the reality is that I've spent the past year working with Dr Brendon and others trying to figure out a credible alternative path - to really define an integrated approach that is simple, systematic and scientifically credible.

In all honesty it's been a lot of sleepless nights and struggles - at times it’s felt like stumbling around in the dark trying to find the light switch. But the important thing is that we got there and given the loyal nature of this readership I wanted to share it here first in the hope it can have value for you as well.

Trying To Find Your Way

There are two common traits I encounter time and time again with leaders right now:

  1. They feel 'stuck' or 'lost' and feel they have lost their sense of purpose

  2. They are trying to do everything right in terms of their performance and wellbeing, but they are struggling to work out what is working and how all the pieces fit together

When the image of a broken compass came to me it was the perfect way to capture these feelings - that desire to move forward, but the struggle to work out where and how. A lot of energy and effort being expended, but without clear direction.

It also links perfectly to our belief that our role is that of guides - using data, insights and coaching to empower Program participants to live better and lead better.

The distinction is that we strongly believe that you still have to have agency over your own life.

Our guidance. Your path to walk.

So what caused my sleepless nights? It was designing the right compass - a compass for leadership. A compass for life.

The North Star Method

The North Star Method is the ‘compass’ that powers the Prime Performance Program. In our world it's:

N = North Star - A symbol of guidance. It represents finding one's true path and staying aligned with core values so you can lead with purpose

E = Energy - The vital force that powers how you show up and lead in life

W = Wellbeing - The synergy of mind and body that creates your internal balance

 S = Sleep - Life's foundation. A fundamental requirement for health and well-being

And at the heart of the compass is cognitive performance - your silent superpower - shaping how you think, decide and act.

Why North Star? It’s because this is what knits everything together. This is the shining spear-tip at the heart of our integrated approach to leadership and life.

Without understanding your North Star you are just treading water in life. You may have your 'fuel' and your balance, but for what purpose?

But to be able to find it, you need to be in the right place, physically, mentally, emotionally.

Everything is connected.

Your North Star Assessment

I started this whole mission because I know first-hand how tough leadership is. That's why I'm here to share, not sell.

Even if you never participate in the Prime Performance Program, I want you to benefit from our insights. So here's where to start:

What would you regret not pursuing if you looked back in 5 years?

Write down your first instinct.

Then ask yourself:

"If my current path became impossible tomorrow, what would excite me then?"

Again. Write down your first instinct.

Here's the crucial part - don't rush this:

Stop. Switch off your 'autopilot' and sit with both questions for 24 hours before revisiting your answers.

Invest time in this. Be intentional and don’t just go through the motions.

  • Question your assumptions: "I know I used to think this, but is that really still the case?"

  • Use your emotions as data points: "How would I actually feel if I was in this position in 5 years?"

  • Don't impose limiting beliefs: "There's no point thinking like that as it's not realistic."

When you return to your answers after 24 hours, notice what's changed. The gap between your immediate response and your deeper reflection can start triggering insights around where your true North Star may lie.

This is just the first step on a much deeper journey of integration - one that requires systematic work across all elements of the compass.
